Double fatality as truck and car collide at highway

(02:10) - A truck and car collide at Highway 59 westbound near Northway Sunday afternoon.

Two male vehicles collided at about 2:50 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the highway in the parking lot of a business in the 2500 block of South Wintorm Ave.

When the truck flipped over, one driver, 21-year-old William DeMott Jr., was fatally struck.

The other, 21-year-old Jacob A. Hensley, was not injured in the crash.

DeMott, the victim's cousin who was standing in front of the car, said his cousin was driving in the left-hand lane with a "flip."

"He turned and just lost control and hit the side of the car," DeMott said.

"We both rolled off the back of the truck, there was not enough room, but he wasn't going to let his head down," DeMott said.

"But there is so much blood in the street."

Hensley was taken by helicopter to Loma Linda University Medical Center in Orange County.

"The truck struck the guy and he was pinned under there," Hensley's mother, Amy Hensley, said. "He could have taken his head off, it could have been his eye."

Hensley died at the scene.

Hensley's family said he loved basketball, the school sport they loved, and his grandfather worked at the bank.

"The boys and girls always went to basketball games with me and he always played in a different style," Hensley's uncle, David Hensley said. "He was just such a funny little guy, always joking and happy about anything."

A passenger in the truck who was not injured was not injured during the crash.

Hensley died Saturday in Santa Clara. The driver, DeMott, survived.

"We're still trying to piece things together," DeMott's mother said. "And I know he's doing all the right things. He's doing it well to recover. It's just so sad."

Share market mayhem fed inflation, then markets slumped even further. It is still not clear whether the recent correction in Chinese interest rates, in combination with the sharp decline in Chinese wealth, has played a role in China's economy slowing.

China's slowdown is also playing a role in Japan's, with the nation's GDP contraction the fastest since the mid-1990s — and with the Bank of Japan's bond yields falling further during the last week and a half. The central banks' decision not to raise rates during the third quarter is probably their most significant since 2007. The European Union, Australia and other central banks have been reluctant to hike rates since October when they learned that the global economic slowdown was spreading and that the United States' stock markets were in a deep recession.

And while many in the central banks have not raised rates, a number of the world's central banks has done so on their watch. The European Central Bank raised its benchmark interest rates for the first time in 2014 and the Fed has previously lifted rates and increased the money supply in an effort to slow the slowdown in emerging markets.

The Bank for International Settlements in Washington has warned in a recent report that low interest rates are helping countries in the world's fifth largest economy. "Global financial conditions suggest that further accommodative monetary policy will likely benefit several economies, both in terms of higher growth and macroeconomic stability, as well as providing a buffer for global economic activity from the broader effects of rising debt levels," the central bankers stated.

In response to the global economy slowing, policymakers in many developed countries have already begun to slow their pace of expansion — and have begun to focus on other areas, such as investment and debt markets.

The Federal Reserve cut rates and pushed up the money supply in February 2015 to spur expansion. In May of last year, a Bank of Japan central banker warned that the risk to the global economy had increased because low rates had boosted the appetite for capital investment. A further increase was seen in December when the central bank raised rates again following Japan's decision to buy more government bonds.
